Bootcamp briefing 2023

Initial situation

Medical care in the rural district of Passau is a challenge. On the one hand, due to the shortage of skilled workers, especially in the field of junior medical staff, and on the other hand, due to the high degree of urban sprawl in the district and the associated long journeys for patients. This leads to difficult access to medical services, especially in the area of specialists, and an inadequately served population. This is especially true for older citizens, who are particularly affected due to their lack of mobility.

MVZ as a focal point

This problem is now to be addressed in a newly designed medical care centre (MVZ). The MVZ bundles medical services from different disciplines in one physical location. For example, general practitioner, dentist, physiotherapist, etc. In addition, various preventive and after-care services are integrated in this centre. To complete the cycle of prevention, medical treatment and rehabilitation, various tools from the field of telemedicine are also used to ensure 360° care.

Data Science – predictive analysis

This holistic approach offers interesting opportunities for the medicine of the future through the different phases of the course of disease and recovery. Through systematic data collection in a holistic approach, fundamental patterns and relationships can be identified. These patterns, in turn, can be used as a basis for a better understanding of disease and health trajectories. When all medical and non-medical data are taken into account, effective and rational decisions can be made, therapies individualised or diseases detected at an early stage. Big data and smart data are key terms for the future of medicine. This enables intelligent applications in various areas:

  • Decision-making at the clinical level

  • Image processing and diagnosis in medicine

  • Monitoring of persistent diseases

  • Hospital data management

Our Challenge

The aim is to create a "health" app that will support this holistic approach. This app should include the following functions, among others:

  • Communication platform (with doctor/therapist)

  • Push messages

  • Supportive training (through video support)

  • Nutritional counselling

  • Remote diagnosis by photo recording, (e.g. skin screening, perspective automated)

  • Connection to smartphone functions (e.g. pedometer)

Furthermore, the following data of the patient should be recorded and be able to be combined in a profile.

  • Name

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Occupation

  • Relationship status

  • Children

  • Social aspects

  • Sports activities

  • Nutrition

  • Insurance number

  • Vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, blood sugar, etc.)

Contact

The main contact persons for the project is Florian Zahrer from the district of Passau.

About the district of Passau

The district of Passau is located in the Bavarian administrative district of Lower Bavaria. The independent city of Passau pushes into the district from the east like a wedge, so that the district extends in a semicircle around this city. In terms of area, it is the third largest district in Bavaria and the fifth largest in terms of population, bordering Upper Austria to the east and south.
