Briefing 2025
Initial situation
When household appliances suddenly break down, it usually means frustration, high costs, and additional electronic waste. But what if consumers had more freedom of choice? What if spare parts, controls, and designs were openly accessible and repairs and adjustments were back in their own hands?
Our challenge
This is exactly where our challenge comes in: "Back in Control” asks what an open, modular, and sustainable future for household appliances could look like. From app or touchscreen controls to classic buttons – the choice should be up to the users again.
A first prototype already exists: MyGenWashy, an open-source washing machine control system that was developed in just three days as part of a hackathon. Now Mariahilfer i, IoT Austria, and Smander.com are looking for creative minds and committed companies who want to drive forward the democratization of technology in everyday life.

About us
smander.com
Smander is the purpose-built solution designed to help makers and small businesses achieve CE compliance for their products. Navigating the various EU directives and regulations regarding product safety can be a nightmare, especially for new businesses. While it is theoretically possible to achieve full CE compliance independently, the process often involves significant roadblocks.
