Briefing 2025/26
Our Fundamental Question
How can vibration data help us find faults faster, more precisely, and before real damage occurs?
In this challenge, we invite makers, engineers, and data-driven innovators to develop a vibration-based diagnostic system for train motor–gearbox units. The goal is to significantly reduce troubleshooting time by automatically identifying defective components based on vibration behavior.
The Challenge
You will work on a solution that:
Measures vibrations on motor–gearbox assemblies
Detects abnormal behavior when vibrations or noise occur
Identifies the faulty component by analyzing vibration frequencies relative to wheel rotation
Your system should support maintenance teams by clearly pointing to the root cause instead of long manual search processes.
What Makes This Interesting
Strong signal-processing focus: frequency analysis, patterns, and correlations
Real industrial data with direct impact on maintenance efficiency
Hardware + software challenge: sensing, algorithms, and system integration
Technical Focus Areas
Definition of relative vibration frequencies
Automated fault detection and classification
Adaptation to different wheel diameters
Hardware concept: sensors, processing unit, data transfer to a server
Who Should Join?
Makers with a passion for signal processing and sensors
Embedded and edge-computing enthusiasts
Data analysts who enjoy turning raw signals into insights
Teams excited by predictive maintenance and diagnostics
If you like finding hidden patterns in noisy data and building systems that turn vibrations into knowledge, this challenge is for you.
Help make train maintenance smarter, faster, and more precise!
